The Challenge! 25 Verses in 25 Days

A new year dawns! Can you believe it is already the final day of 2009? Wow! The realization that life is so short motivates me to focus on the things that are really important, such as memorizing and meditating on God’s Word.

One year ago today our first memorization challenge began with II Timothy 2 and sixty-one people successfully completed the goal. Are you ready to take on a new challenge to start a new year? Once again, The Challenge is to memorize the following chapter of the Bible, one verse a day for 25 days, beginning January 1st!

The Passage

The Epistle to the Colossians (Codex Harleianus 5557)Colossians 3. While under house arrest in Rome, Paul received a visit from Epaphras, the leader of the church in Colosse. He brought good news that the Christians at Colosse were continuing in the faith and bearing fruit. However, he also brought bad news–a dangerous heresy had crept into the church.

In the first two chapters of Colossians, Paul completely overwhelms this heresy as he powerfully articulates the fullness of Christ and the completeness that we experience in Him. Then, in Chapter 3, he lays out practical instructions for living a life that pleases God. Every verse rings with truth and provides fertile Enjoy digging into God's Wordground for rich study.

Beginning tomorrow, we will be highlighting one verse each day here at livingthejourney.com with some thoughts from one of the Journey staff. Please join in the discussion and share what insights and application that the Lord reveals to you!

The Requirement

All Journey alumni who successfully memorize Colossians 3 and are able to quote the entire passage by memory before midnight, January 25, 2010 should have their father or mother call the Journey to the Heart office on January 26th or 27th. This will verify successful completion of The Challenge. The number is 630-323-9800 ext. 522.

The Rewards

David of old overflowed with amazement at the rewards of meditation on Scripture: “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts” (Psalm 119:97-100).

Inspiration of Creation 2010 CalendarEveryone who completes The Challenge will receive anInspiration of Creation” 2010 calendar. The front cover shot is a picture from the Northwoods, with the Conference Center shrouded in morning fog.

In addition to this, there are other rewards that will remain a surprise until we announce them at the end of The Challenge. :)

The names of all those who have successfully met The Challenge will be published here at livingthejourney.com on January 31.

Will you be on the list?

Wherever God Wants Me to Go

PaulI arrived in Oklahoma a little scared and uncertain. I had gone on a Journey several months before, and there God had opened my eyes to sin and rebellion that had been in my heart for a long time. I had then become convicted like never before. I told God I would follow Him wherever He wanted me to go. Several months later, someone suggested I go to teach character in the Oklahoma public schools.

I had all kinds of objections. One was, “I’m not qualified; I’ve never even been in a public school.” Another was, “I’m not worthy to teach character. I’m the last one to tell others about self-control and other character qualities.” A third was, “The kids will think I’m stupid.” Having all these fears, you can see why I was scared and uncertain when I came to Oklahoma. But I had decided to follow God’s leading.

Discipleship is worth everythingWhile I was there, God did the impossible. He made me into someone who could teach and reach others for Him. He gave me a good relationship with Him. I cannot count the times I had no idea what to say in a situation, but after a short prayer, the words came to me. In Bible club, the Lord gave me two fifth grade boys that were trouble makers. I had no idea what I was going to do. I kept loving and praying for them and tried not to give up, but I was at my wits end with their annoying antics. Yet by the end of the year, they not only were cooperative, but they were listening and learning as well. My relationship with them is proof that I can trust God in any circumstance.

This is the greatest thing I learned there: I can trust God! Every time I had given something to God, I would end up taking it back: music, movies, TV, friends, you name it; I couldn’t seem to let anything go for good. I realized the reality was I didn’t believe God. I didn’t believe He was greater than all these worldly things or that He could make my life fun without them. But God proved to me that I could trust Him with everything in my life, and the end result would be greater then anything I could possibly have imagined.

Do I still make wrong choices and go back to old things? Yes. But my whole outlook has changed! I am learning things from the Bible I never knew, and my walk with God is better than it has ever been before. Going on the Journey was the first stepping stone to a whole new life, a life that was not ruled by my earthly desires, but by the Lord’s guidance and direction.

The Works of His Hands Are Verity

KaylaOn the morning of August 23rd, 2009, I sat with my dad in the airport parking lot soon to board my flight headed for Indianapolis. A hundred thoughts were swirling through my head as I prepared for this four week trip, and I was glad when we paused to read a few Psalms. As we were reading through Psalm 111, I suddenly stopped dead in my tracks at verse seven. It said, “The works of his hands are verity…” I had read that verse before, but it was just as if I hadn’t. It was as if the words had leapt off the page, straight into my heart, for I was headed to a place called Verity Institute.

To start at the beginning, my parents heard about Verity at the ATI Regional Training Conference in 2007. They were very impressed with the discipleship focus of the school as well as the accelerated learning, saving both time and money. My father told me he strongly desired for me to obtain a college degree. While it wasn’t exactly my own first choice, I knew I had to trust and obey the Lord through the authorities He had placed in my life.

During my last semester of high school, I participated in Verity’s dual-enrollment program. From home, I took a Biblical Worldview class, went through the Life Purpose Planning workbook, and studied and tested for two CLEP exams.

Keeping a one-accord focus on seeking the Lord is first priority at VerityIn June of this year, I graduated from high school with plans to apply to Verity for the fall semester as a distance learning student. In August, I attended orientation and the Verity Journey to the Heart (my second Journey). The atmosphere of the Verity campus cannot be accurately described with words. I could tell after spending just a few days there that the staff and students are truly sold out for Christ and desire to please Him in all they do. On the Journey, I enjoyed studying the heart conditions again with my team, seeking deeper insights from the Lord. It was incredible to see the Lord work among our student body and bring us to one accord, allowing us to start the year off on the right foot. I hope to become an on-site student in the future, Lord-willing.

The Verity Campus in Indianapolis, INMy first semester as a Verity student was stretching both mentally and spiritually. Every two weeks, I was given the opportunity to trust God for the results of my test and experience the joy of being in His will regardless of whether or not I scored well. God taught me to cry out to Him for the grace I needed for each moment and focus on the spiritual insights He was giving me through my studies rather than on just the academic lessons. Colossians 2 tells us that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Jesus Christ. Verity acknowledges this truth by centering all aspects of their program on growing our love for the Lord.

One of my favorite things about Verity is the spiritual accountability provided by the leaders, staff, and fellow students. Each week, we are assigned a command of Christ or character quality and corresponding verses to meditate on. At the end of the week, we must write an essay on what the Lord taught us through the command or quality and its application to our lives. This discipline has proven to be invaluable in deepening my walk with the Lord.

I know Verity is the work of God’s hands in my life. The eternal blessings are what I am most grateful for; the college degree is just the icing on the cake.

How Can I Keep the Passion?

Have you ever asked the question, “How can I keep the vision and passion that the Lord gave me at Journey to the Heart?”

Sarah asked herself this question and came to the conclusion that God wanted her to be accountable to other young ladies in the area of studying God’s Word, and also in the area of becoming a disciple-maker. The Lord tells us to do this in Matthew 28:19-20 by instructing us to go and teach all nations the commands of Christ. It is the ideal and ultimate calling, because Christ Himself went before us and set the examples of making disciples in a world of darkness, sin, and bondage.

Forty-nine commands of Christ are set before us in the New Testament that build upon the foundation that was laid in the Old Testament. They show us how to better love and serve both God and our neighbor. These commands help us glorify God better and live the Christian life effectively.

Sarah with her sisters Hannah and Bethany, and a friend Esther who will also contribute to this blog Sarah would love for other ladies to join her in her study of these commands. She has designed a blog specifically for sharing:

  • personal insights,
  • rhemas,
  • and stories of life application.

The goal of this study is not only to grow in knowledge of the 49 commands, and to glorify God in Christ like-living, but also to become equipped to go and make disciples. It is important to dedicate our personal time and energy to not only evangelizing, but also to learning how to become disciple-makers.

If you are interested in knowing more about this study, please contact Sarah.

EXCEL: A Chance to Go Deeper

OliviaIn September ‘08 I was able to attend a Journey to the Heart. In many ways I can see how God used those ten days in preparation for the time I spent at EXCEL this past fall. I know that both the Journey and EXCEL were instrumental in deepening my relationship with God and I feel blessed to have been able to participate in them.

During each week of EXCEL, we learned many new things about who our God is, and just how much He cares for and love us as individuals. I’m so thankful for Mr. and Mrs. Bell and all the other men and women who were willing to take time out of their busy schedules just to share with us what God has done in their lives. It would be impossible for me to single out one speaker or activity as my favorite, but I will say one of the best things about EXCEL was the friendly and encouraging atmosphere that we were surrounded with each day.

Often times I find myself being content with simply learning something and not actually taking what I’ve learned and using it to benefit others that God has placed in my life. At EXCEL, I felt that God was really emphasizing the importance of sharing what He has taught me and allowing Him to use me for His purposes, not mine. (Luke 12:48: “Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.”)

Another part of my life that God has been working on is the area of contentment. When I take my focus off of God it’s so easy for me to become discontent with where I am and what I am doing . . . or not doing. Since going to EXCEL, I have had a new appreciation for my family and the opportunities God has given my at this point in my life. I am constantly reminded that God has a wonderful plan for my life and all I need to do is trust Him and give all my expectations to Him. (Psalm 62:5: “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.”)

The G-R-E-A-T Fire

On the way home, hungry, tired, and a bit sooty, we talked about the day and Elijah said, “I’m kind of excited to see what God has in store for us. He wouldn’t just take half of our business away without having something in mind.” — by Brenda Kaneshiro

~

On August 28th of this year we were watching the Anger Resolution DVD series by Bill Gothard for our morning worship and part of our homeschool program. On this day, he gave an example of a man who lost his business, put these principles to practice, and within a day or two got not only his business back, but more.

Mr. Gothard gave an acronym to use to remember the principles. In short, here it is: When you are faced with a trial (great or small) remember to be GREAT.

  • G ive thanks immediately! You don’t have to know why or really feel thankful, just give thanks knowing that God has a purpose for everything.
  • R ejoice in all things. This is where you begin looking for possible benefits like teaching a lesson, drawing you closer to God, putting someone specific in your path, etc.
  • E ngraft Scripture. Romans 8:28 is good for this one, but you can also apply one that fits your situation.
  • A sk God to give you added grace to get through. Realize that He wants you to succeed and be happy and healthy. It takes a good character, and this is sometimes what it takes to develop our character.
  • T riumph in the victory! When you follow the prior steps, you will triumph and know it was God’s victory in you!

So, we learned this, and I gave it to the children in the children’s story the following day at church. As we were there in the church service, we saw a fire engine race past the church with its siren on. After church, we could see smoke coming from the hills behind the hospital. By the end of lunch, the fire had gotten bigger. On our way home that evening, we stopped by one of our apiary sites that was within 3 miles of the fire to see if it might be in danger. We had 33 of our oldest and strongest hives there. That was about half of our production hives. We drove in, and it was apparent that the fire was moving in the other direction. We asked one of the neighboring residents to call us if anything changed, and then we went home.

The Kaneshiro FamilyAt 5:00 the next morning on Sunday, August 30, we got a call from the neighbor saying the wind had changed, and our bees may be in danger. We woke the children, got everyone dressed and in our bee suits and jumped in the truck to race to the apiary which was about 30 minutes away. On the way there, we discussed how we had given those bees as well as our other assets to God. We reminded each other that He is the one who has blessed our business, and He can remove the bees if it seems best to Him.

When we arrived, it was obvious that the bees would soon be in the path of the fire. There was no time to move them all. Each of the 33 colonies weighed an average of 300 pounds! We had to make a quick decision. We could save a few. Maybe we had enough time to load 4 or 5 onto the truck and get out, but the problem would be with the rest of the bees. There were approximately 1.5 million bees in that apiary. As soon as the fire would approach the hives, the bees would fly out. The only clear airpath for them was right into the line of residential homes where the occupants and firemen were already working to put out the fire. One neighbor in particular is deathly allergic to bee stings. This could possibly create a bigger disaster than the fire.

The only thing to do was to take the minutes we had to close the entrance of each hive to make sure the bees did not fly out. We broke into teams. Father and Mother got busy using duct tape to close up the entrances on one side of the apiary, Elijah and Tabitha teamed up to tape up the entrances of the hives on the other side of the apiary, and Elisabeth and Esther stood in the back of the truck watching the fire closely and letting us know how close it was getting.

The FirePretty soon, both Elisabeth and Esther were all excited telling us we needed to leave now! We could feel the heat, and the flames were big, loud and close. We had to get out while we could. We drove around to the street and helped one of the homeowners keep the fire from his house. We used hoses, wet towels and sheets, and shovels. Every once in awhile we would see a cloud of black smoke go up. It was another hive going up in flames. The water carrying helicopters came over us with their buckets and dumped as much water as fast as they could on the residences. We were so thankful that none of the houses got burned, and no one got stung, even though the fire burned over 8000 acres with 17 fingers to monitor at the same time.

The AftermathWhen it was over, all that was left of our bee hives were little piles of nails and metal queen excluders where each hive had been. As we walked through, we remembered the people whose homes each of those hives came from when we removed them as wild bees. We thought of all the honey we had harvested at this site, and how blessed we had been.

On the way home, hungry, tired, and a bit sooty, we talked about the day and Elijah said, “I’m kind of excited to see what God has in store for us. He wouldn’t just take half of our business away without having something in mind.” Tabitha said, “Well, we don’t have to move those bees any more or harvest their honey.”

Sure enough, a few days later on September 3, we were invited to speak at a retreat in Canada. We had been asked earlier during the summer, but we declined because we knew at this time we would be busy harvesting honey and moving bees. Now we had only a few weeks to get our talks ready and get passports and tickets, but God blessed, and we had a wonderful time! Those people in Canada told us the things we presented were just what they needed to hear.

We just arrived back home two days ago, and God is still blessing. Now we’re just arranging for a new account with a large order. Praise God, He is so good! When the children have a disagreement between them or we’re tempted to feel like we’ve been wronged, we can look back and remember, “Oh, G-R-E-A-T!!”
