Free from Bitterness!

journey to the heart 031For many years I struggled with bitterness towards several people who had deeply offended my family. As a result, I had grown apathetic towards God and unconcerned for others. Conflicts often resulted because of my pride. Seeing the spiritual needs in my life, my parents encouraged me to take some time to seek the Lord on a Journey of the Heart.

As I flipped through the pages of the Journey manual, I didn’t think that I was guilty of any of the bad heart conditions that were explained in it. As the days went by, however, I became more and more convinced of just how sinful I had been. Not only did I have a prideful and murmuring heart towards God’s people, I also had an adulterous heart. Through salvation I had entered a covenant marriage relationship with Jesus Christ, but I had allowed other relationships to compete with my love for him. I had been expecting benefits from these relationships that only God could give, such as security, direction, and fulfillment in life. I had set this idol in my heart and depended more on it then I did on God.

02-2009_2750I immediately asked God for forgiveness. I gave Him my competing affections so that nothing could take my attention from Him again. I confessed everything to my parents. The hardest thing was asking forgiveness of those whom I had been bitter toward and verbally blessing them. For the first time I felt a joy and love towards them. My relationship with God has been completely restored!

Now I have completely surrendered my heart, soul, mind and strength to God’s will. I will not let any competing affection come between me and Him. I will delight in Him and Him alone.

Just Add Salt

Ye are the salt of the earth..."Ye are the salt of the earth…"

We’ve all heard Matthew 5:13 before. But what does it mean to be the salt of the earth? Take a minute and think about these four characteristics of salt:

1. Salt Adds Flavor

I never was much of a chef. One day I tried to make brownies for a group of over fifty people. Somehow I forgot the dry ingredients! That’s right, I missed the flour, the baking soda, and all that good stuff! I was about to put my batter in the oven when someone came along, noticed something was quite wrong, and rescued what would have otherwise been a catastrophe. Needless to say, I’m not much of a chef.

Way back when, however, I was pretty good at baking bread. Somehow it always seemed to turn out just right—soft, fluffy, and delicious. One day it turned out particular well, at least it looked particularly nice. But it only took a nibble to know that something was drastically wrong—I had forgotten to put in the salt. It amazes me how just a teaspoon of something can make such a huge difference!

A little salt goes a long way. Have you ever confused teaspoons of salt with tablespoons of salt? Oh, my. That capital "T" sure makes a big difference in the recipe! My brother made that mistake one time when making biscuits. They tasted awful! The only way my sister could rescue the poor biscuits was to triple everything else in the recipe to match the amount of salt. Needless to say, we were eating biscuits for quite a while! :)

Grains of saltAs the salt of the earth, believers have a key roll to play. The Jesus warns, "if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men."

  • Would others say that I leave a "savour" of Christ when I am around them?

2. Salt Creates Thirst

Have you ever heard the saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink?" There’s a lot of truth to that. However, farmers found an easy way to make the horse drink. How did they do it? They simply salted the oats!

"Salting the oats" is one thing that makes the difference between a good communicator and an average communicator. Just about any "average Joe" can talk about a concept with somebody. But a good speaker will grab the attention of his audience with an illustration, a riddle, or a question that causes those who are listening to perk up and wonder what the answer is. And when they finally find out, it pricks the heart and sticks in the memory.

When Jesus spoke, people listened and marveled. He often used thought-provoking questions and vivid illustrations. We are told, "Let your word be always with grace, having been seasoned with salt, to know how you ought to answer each one." (Colossians 4:6). The Greek word for seasoned means "to prepare, that is, spice (with stimulating condiments)." So spice up your speach!

  • The next time I am trying to communicate a truth that I know someone needs to hear, how can I "salt the oats" so that they are eager to listen and understand?

3. Salt Preserves

Salt preserves meat Salt is a preservative. It draws out the moisture in meat, which prevents the survival of bacteria. Back in the olden days, folks would pack their meat with salt in order to preserve it. With salt, one can theoretically preserve food for decades without it being consumed by bacteria.

In the same way that salt preserves meat, the morality that Jesus Christ commands from His disciples is what will preserve a nation from self-destruction. In their video Empty Cities, Moody Institute of Science traced the fall of many ancient civilizations to the collapse of morality within those civilizations. This certainly coincides with the admonition of Proverbs 14:34: "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people."

The dire need for morality in our nation was emphasized by John Adams in 1798: "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

  • Which one of Jesus Christ’s commands of love am I meditating on today so that I can become salt and light as I live it out in a corrupt and immoral world?

4. Salt is Required for a Healthy Body

Tiny grains of salt Sodium is one of the primary electrolytes in the body. There are many vital minerals in unrefined salt that are needed for optimal bodily function. Without salt, we will experience severe, even fatal, neurological problems.

Paul says in Romans 12:5, "We, being many, are one Body in Christ, and every one members one of another." When one member of the Body suffers, "all the members suffer with it" (I Corinthians 12:26). What one member does affects the entire Body. (See I Corinthians 6:15-20.)

  • What can I do today that will contribute to the health of the Body of Christ? What things am I allowing in my life that may be causing the Body to suffer?

A Story of True Love

Andy Warner made a commitment to honor God in all of his relationships. Seeking to keep his heart focused on the Lord, he spent his single years serving the Lord in ministry. This involved traveling across the nation and to several foreign countries. After immersing himself in the Scriptures for three years at the International Ministerial Institute, he led a Journey to the Heart team of fellows in March 2008. His wholehearted love for the Lord challenged each of the young men on his team to deepen their walk with God.

Amanda Shepherd made a commitment as a teenager to guard her heart and to not seek deep friendships with guys without her parents’ blessing. Instead, she sought to honor God in every area of her life. In April 2008 she led a Journey to the Heart team of girls and there found renewed contentment in her relationship with the Lord.

Through a number of incredible events orchestrated by the Lord, their lives were brought together. On August 30, 2008 they were married. Today they are celebrating their first Valentine’s Day as a couple. In our day of so many casual commitments and selfish relationships, here is a couple who followed the Lord and did it right. May this story challenge each of us to do the same!

Conquering Fear

The first evening of my Journey, I sat down with my Bible to read. The Psalm for that day was number 49 and God knew that was exactly the chapter that I needed.

In previous months I had been convicted that the greatest hindrance in my relationship with God was fear, especially the fear that my brothers might follow in my cousin’s corrupt footsteps, making similar mistakes and thereby sacrificing their wonderful God-given potential to do great things!

Because of that fear, I found myself reacting harshly to my brothers and having a very difficult time loving them. I had surrendered my fears to God and given my brothers to Him in prayer a number of times before, but it was still laying as a heavy burden on my heart.

As I began reading Psalm 49, it was as if I had were reading it for the first time. Portions of the chapter seem to leap off of the page and my eyes filled with tears. “Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil? None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)… But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. Be not thou afraid…”

After this new reminder that He was so lovingly looking over those who are dear to me, I could again freely surrender all of my fears to Him, and trust Him with the future, because I know that He has a bigger purpose in mind than what I can see, and that He will work all things together for good!!

Since coming home, I have had a greater freedom to love my brothers and treat them in a Christ-like manner. I am truly thankful to God the eight younger brothers He has blessed me with, and through God’s grace, I am looking forward to continuing to improve my relationship with them!

Continue The Challenge!

After an exciting January of memorizing the Word together, many have asked, "When’s the next Challenge?"

Northwoods Conference Center Now that February is upon us, the Journey team is gearing up for the first Journeys of 2009 and also making plans for the Living the Journey Conferences in August. With a full schedule, it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to host an official Challenge here at livingthejourney.com until possibly next January. So now our challenge to you is … start your own memorization challenge!

It will take some initiative and diligence, but the rewards can last forever. Here are some tips to get you started.

1. Select a Chapter

The entire Bible is good, but you have to start somewhere. Different passages speak directly to different areas of life. What needs and struggles are you facing right now? Many Psalms are excellent when you are feeling depression or discouragement, such as Psalm 42 or 139. Are you struggling with the lusts of the flesh? Try Romans 6, 7, and 8. Fighting temptations? Memorize James 1. Do you want a closer relationship with Jesus Christ? Engraft John 15. If you’re up for a challenge and would like to gain a hunger for more of the Word, try Psalm 119!

There are so many wonderful chapters! Leave a comment and share what passages have meant a lot to you.

A Journey team studying the Scriptures2. Gather a Team

Ask the Lord to bring to your mind some other believers whom you could challenge to join you in memorizing a chapter of Scripture in a specified period of time. It could include the members of your very own family, young people in your church, those whom you are keeping in contact from your Journey, or even a Christian family in your neighborhood. Go to them and see if they would be willing to join you in a challenge.

3. Set a Deadline

Stretch yourself and make it something you have to work to accomplish. Don’t make it impossible but don’t make it too easy. You’re not a wimp. :)

For me, a verse a day is a lot to keep going over a long period of time and it allows me time to meditate on the verse throughout the day.

4. Establish Accountability

Ask your parents, your grandparents, your pastor, or someone you look up to to keep you accountable. Select someone whom you’d hate to disappoint. Without the motivation of accountability, it is much too easy to become "too busy" to complete your objective.

Northwoods Sunset 5. Report the results

Let us know what the Lord taught you as challenged yourself and others to memorize His Living Word, mediate on it, and apply it to life. We may even post your word of testimony here to encourage others!
